How to Beat an Egg

Provided below is a step-by-step guide on how to beat an egg.  Many of the bread recipes on Our Southern Odyssey requires that the eggs used are beaten well.  You don’t need any fancy tools to beat an egg.  We have provided a guide below.  Now, all you need to do is pick out a bread recipe and start baking.

Directions:

Tools that are needed when beating an egg are: a glass mixing bowl, fork, optional small glass bowl, spoon and whisk.

Start by taking the number of eggs out of the refrigerator that is called for in the recipe and allow them to get to room temperature, or close to it.  The eggs are usually the first thing that we get out when gathering up the ingredients to prepare a recipe.  Crack all the eggs in the mixing bowl.  Place the egg shells to the side in another small bowl or on a paper towel.  Egg shells are great to use in compost.

To crack the egg either crack the egg shell on the side of the mixing bowl that all the eggs will be going in, or crack the egg one at a time on a small bowl.  If you are confident that you will not get any egg shell into the bowl with the eggs then crack the eggs on the side of the mixing bowl.  However, if you are not that good at cracking an egg and the shells like to crumble on you, the best thing to do is crack the egg one at a time in a separate bowl.  Make sure to check for any egg shells in the egg, if there are none then, add the egg to the main mixing bowl with the other eggs.  If egg shells do get in the egg don’t worry just take a spoon and try to get the egg shell out before adding the egg to the main mixing bowl.

After all the eggs are in the mixing bowl take and with one hand hold the mixing bowl and with the other take a fork or whisk, whichever you are more comfortable with, and begin by beating the eggs energetically.  I personally like to hold the glass mixing bowl at a slight angle when beating the eggs.  Also, move the fork or whisk in a circular motion instead of back and forth.  The eggs need to be smooth and incorporated well within themselves not splashed out onto the counter.  We want all the egg yolks broken and mixed with the egg whites.  We will know when the eggs are ready when they become light yellow in color.  Now the eggs are ready to add to the other wet ingredients in the recipe you are preparing.  So, that is all it takes to know how to beat an egg.
