Grain-Free baking powder

The reason that you may want to think about making your own baking powder is because like most processed foods, baking powder contains low quality ingredients.  The most popular cheap filler out there is grains.  If you are Paleo or for some other reason are avoiding grains, then you may want to think about making your own baking powder.

It’s important to note that this recipe is aluminum free.  Most store bought baking powders contain aluminum unless otherwise stated.  We come into contact with enough toxins during a day, it is foolish to add more when you can avoid it.

The reason that store bought baking powders contains grains, most commonly cornstarch, is because it is relatively cheap.  However, starches do serves a purpose in baking powder.  The starch is added to keep the acid and the base from activating and creating their chemical reaction before you have a chance to add it to the baking recipes.  Without the starch the baking powder would turn as hard as stone and be useless when it comes to baking.  No one wants that.  Since starches play an important role in a baking powder mixture, by adding to the shelf life of the baking powder, we will be using a quality starch.  Starches that you can use include: Potato Starch, Tapioca Starch and Arrowroot Starch.  In our home, we use arrowroot starch.  The reason we use arrowroot starch is because arrowroot is more similar to cornstarch with it’s no odor or flavor characteristics.  Arrowroot is also free from all common allergies and easy for the body to digest.

Note: If you choose not to use a starch you will not be able to make this recipe in advance.  If there is any moisture in the air or in the container that you are putting the mixture of baking soda and cream of tartar in then it could cause them to react with each other and therefore ruin the baking powder.

Even though this recipe contains a starch you should still only make small batches, and after one month make a new batch.

This recipe contains no fillers just core ingredients.  It’s wonderful to know what ingredients are in our food and what better way than to create the blend yourself.

The recipe provided below is an old fashion single acting baking powder recipe.
